At the Mililani Town Center Pet Clinic, your pet is their top priority. They have been providing quality pet services for dogs and cats for over 29 years on Oahu, and they strive to form a solid ongoing relationship with you as well as your beloved pet.

These skilled veterinarians know from experience that the old saying “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” couldn’t be further from the truth. As they get older, dogs may move a little slower, but they still have the ability to learn a thing or two.

The Oahu veterinarians suggest trying to train your dog with these fun tricks:

  • Pet servicesBurrito Wrap: For this trick, you'll need to use a blanket as a prop. First, the dog stands on a blanket and grabs it with his teeth. Then, he rolls over several times, wrapping himself up like a burrito. Depending on your dog, you may be able to teach them one simple command or you may have to break it down into a series of commands. Give him or her a treat as they successfully complete each part. Regardless of your technique you choose, the result is a cute and quite cuddly trick.
  • Play Basketball Or Volleyball: Your dog can join you in your next pickup game. Start by putting a small ball, such as a beach ball, on the ground. When your dog touches it or pushes it with their nose, reward them with a treat. Next start to throw the ball in the air and make sure it lands near your dog. When they go to get it, once again reward them with a treat. Let them get used to you bouncing the ball off of their nose. If you want to make this trick even more advanced, try to train them to bounce the ball toward the basketball hoop or volleyball net.

The Mililani veterinarians say the important thing to remember is to be patient with your pet and to come up with the training technique that works best for them as each pet is different. Old dogs can learn new tricks, it just takes time, training, and a little extra patience.
