About Koltun Ballet Academy

Premier Classical Ballet school in Greater Boston area!

The teachers at the Koltun Ballet Academy in Watertown know that learning proper classical technique is essential to the growth and development of young dancers. The school’s co-founders, Alexandra Koltun and Alex Lapshin, know first-hand how important technique is, because before founding the Academy they both had world-class ballet careers.

Koltun was educated at the renowned Vaganova Ballet Academy in Russia and went on to dance with the Kirov Ballet and train directly under Irina Kolpakova, among others. In her career she danced as a soloist and principle dancer with some of the world’s most renowned ballet companies, including the Boston Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet.

Meanwhile, Lapshin got his start at the legendary Bolshoi Ballet Academy and went on to perform in world tours with the Bolshoi Ballet Company. He also studied directly under Rudolf Nureyev and worked closely with Peter Martins who went on to create an original piece of choreography for him to perform.

These two passionate instructors know that technique is one of the single most important factors in determining whether or not a dancer can progress beyond a certain level. They know from experience that dancers who lack a strong technical foundation are exponentially more likely to experience injury and hit a wall in their training.

That’s why the Koltun Ballet Academy uses a cohesive curriculum that was developed by the American Ballet Theatre. The ABT® National Training Curriculum combines principles from the classical French, Italian, and Russian schools of training, which means every dancer receives a well-rounded classical ballet education. Outcome based guidelines assigned by age group promote high quality training for students of all ages and skill levels.

Dance is a unique art form that fosters creative expression and translates the emotion of the human experience into a physical form. That’s why the instructors at this stellar classical ballet school are dedicated to providing professional caliber training to young students in the Boston Metro area. The Children’s Program serves as a basic foundation for kids aged 3-8, while the pre-professional ballet training takes students who are 9-19 to the next level of dance training.
