As anyone who works in construction knows, it’s absolutely vital to know about the types of material you’re using. This is certainly the case when it comes to concrete since it serves such a vital function in most construction projects. In Connecticut, few folks know more about this material than the team at Meriden-based The L. Suzio York Hill Companies, a supplier of concrete, crushed stone, and asphalt to crews throughout the South Central Connecticut area. As such, these concrete professionals are more than happy to describe the four  types of special concrete that you’ll encounter.

So what are these four types of specialty concrete? Let’s take a look:

  • Pervious Concrete: This is a special type of concrete that, because it’s made of primarily larger aggregates, is actually porous and can let water pass through it, preventing run-off. As such, this type is used in parking lots, areas of light traffic, sidewalks, and greenhouses, and it's popular in sustainable construction.
  • Self-Consolidating Concrete: Because of its high deformability, low yield stress, and moderate viscosity, this type allows for uniform suspension during transportation and as it sets. These characteristics make it a little more expensive than other types, and it’s most often used in casting and repairs.
  • Fiber Reinforced Concrete: Fibrous material inside this type of concrete makes this type perfect for structural reinforcement. The fibers are uniformly distributed and can be composed of steel, glass, as well as synthetic or natural materials, with each type influencing the nature of the mix as a whole. Among other things, the reinforcement controls cracking and reduces permeability.
  • Ready-Mix Concrete: Ready-mix concrete products ensure precision and specialization because they’re delivered to the work site ready to go. Mixing occurs during manufacture and while in transit, reducing workplace confusion or inconsistency in preparation.

Naturally, the professionals at The L. Suzio York Hill Companies are more than happy to discuss your concrete needs and suggest the type that’s best for you. To learn more about the materials this company distributes and the services they provide, check out their website or call (203) 237-8421.
