Sitting or standing at work all day? Engaging in recreational activities? Let’s face it, we rely on our lower back every single day, but it's easy to ignore it as long as it's working properly. We often forget about our lower back until we start experiencing severe back pain.

Common lower back pains are best treated with preventative visits before they occur, rather than after the pain has surfaced. The doctors at  Forest Park Chiropractic & Acupuncture in Cincinnati offer some useful information about common lower back injuries:

  • Lumbar Strain: Strains are injuries to muscle or tendons and they can occur from frequent pulling or twisting. People who improperly lift heavy objects are at higher risks, but strains can even be caused by overstretching due to slouching in an office chair. It's best to use proper lifting techniques and pay close attention to your posture at work.
  • Sciatica: Sciatica is caused by constant pressure on the sciatic nerve, which can be accompanied by tingling as well as numbness. It will usually only occur on one side, and it is very uncommon for sciatica to be felt on both sides. Both acupuncture and massage therapy have been proven effective in treating sciatica, and they are usually preferred to pain killers or steroid injections.
  • Lumbar Disc Herniation: Spines are made up of vertebrae that are held together by connective tissue (discs) that also serve as a cushion between the bones. The disc consists of a liquid nucleus pulposus, at the center, and annulus fibrosis, which is the tougher outer layer. As we age, the center leaks through the weakening outer layer and pressure is applied to the nerve. Herniated discs affect more than 3 million Americans every year.
