The holidays are the time of year when families across the country load up the car, fill up the tank, and hit the road for winter vacation. And while the family may be looking forward to the final destination, these road trips can test the patience of even the most tranquil individual.

The organizers of the Charlotte AutoFair vintage car show in Charlotte, NC—produced by Hornets Nest Region, AACA—know a little something about hitting the open road. The Charlotte AutoFair is the home of the renowned twice-yearly gathering of car collector enthusiasts who come together from all over the world in the fall and spring for a four-day event to buy and sell antique cars, restoration parts, and supplies. Roughly 150,000 attendees descend upon the Charlotte AutoFair for the world’s most famous car show event. That’s a lot of fill-ups at the pump!

The auto show organizers of the Charlotte AutoFair offer a few classic road trip games for making it through your holiday road trip with your piece of mind intact.

  • I Spy: Before iPads and smartphones took over the world, I Spy proved to be a tried-and-true way of passing the time during road trips. The rules are easy enough for any age: One person chooses an object in their line of sight, and people have to guess the object based on only its color or the first letter the object starts with.
  • 20 Questions: This game is only limited by your family’s creativity. One player has to think of any object or thing that comes to mind, and the rest of the car has 20 questions to narrow down what the object or thing is. The only caveat is that the first question must be, “Animal, vegetable or mineral?”
  • Name That Tune: By either using the radio or singing or humming a popular song (for the musically inclined only!), the first person to recognize the song title wins and gets to pick a new station or tune.
