The holiday season is always celebrated with dazzling light displays both inside and outside the home, but every year those festive arrangements are responsible for fires, falls, and other avoidable accidents. As Austin’s number one electrician, Quantum Electric wants to make sure that you celebrate safely this year.

They offer these Christmas light safety tips to help you stay safe while you decorate:

  • Upgrade To LEDs: The average incandescent bulb generates most of its energy through heat. LEDs, on the other hand, are cool to the touch as well as energy-efficient. They’re also more durable because they’re made of epoxy lenses, not glass.
  • Substitute Real Candles With Battery-Operated Versions: Open flame is always a fire hazard, but combine lit candles with a combustible Christmas tree, mountains of wrapping paper, and other flammable decorations, and the risk of having a fire goes up. Battery-operated candles give the same ambience without all of the safety concerns. If you insist on using the real things, never leave them unattended and place them in areas where they won’t be knocked over.
  • Don’t Fall Asleep With The Lights On: While drifting to sleep in front of a brightly lit Christmas tree sounds like the perfect way to end a winter night, leaving your lights on for extended periods of time only increases the risk of the fire.
  • Use The Right Ladder: When you're putting up exterior lighting, don’t trust that rickety old ladder to keep you from falling. Make sure your ladder is in good condition and place it on an even surface. It’s also best to have someone on the ground to hold it steady.
