If anyone knows about the critical need for community members to learn CPR, it’s the health instructors at Northern KY Emergency Medical Services (also known as NKEMS). As a leading non-profit health services and training organization servicing the Greater Cincinnati area, NKEMS knows firsthand that CPR saves lives. By offering CPR and first aid training to corporations, community, and healthcare providers, NKEMS is helping to ensure an increase in medical safety protection throughout the Cincinnati region.

Fortunately, there are a few basic tips about CPR that everyone can learn. This simple resource could save a life. We recommend you review this quick, informative guide, but here’s a word-for-word recap of the guide’s three essential points you need to know:

  • Call: Check the victim for unresponsiveness. If the person is not responsive and not breathing or not breathing normally, call 911 and return to the victim. In most locations, the emergency dispatcher can assist you with CPR instructions.
  • Pump: If the victim is still not breathing normally, coughing, or moving, begin chest compressions. Push down in the center of the chest two inches 30 times. Pump hard and fast at the rate of at least 100 pumps per minute, or a little faster than once per second.
  • Blow: Tilt the head back and lift the chin. Pinch the nose and cover the mouth with your own, and blow until you see the chest rise. Give two breaths, each lasting one second. Continue with 30 pumps and two breaths until help arrives.

Although the above tips are critical, it’s most important to ensure highly capable, broad-based CPR and first aid training in every capacity of our community and professional environments. Northern KY Emergency Medical Services, a nonprofit organization, is certified by both the American Heart Association and the American Safety and Health Institute. They maintain a small training staff so they can work closely with clientele.

In addition to CPR and first aid training, NKEMS also offers comprehensive health training and services for the workplace in areas including OSHA training and consultations and also provides cardiac screenings and will deliver first aid kits to schools, churches, and businesses.
