Dental care is something that starts in infancy and lasts throughout a lifetime. Your oral health is indicative of your overall health, and taking care of your teeth and gums is essential to avoiding a whole slew of problems, including tooth decay, gum disease, and even bone loss.

Lisa Valderueda, D.M.D. is Waipahu, HI’s talented local dentist, and she consistently stresses the importance of daily oral health vigilance to patients. Check out her best tips regarding daily dental care and enjoy a healthy smile for life:

  • Brushing: Brush your teeth and gums twice daily for two to three minutes using a gentle motion and a soft-bristled brush. Place your brush at a 45-degree angle against the gum line and move it back and forth using wide strokes. Make certain you brush all surfaces, including the inner surfaces, outer surfaces, and chewing surfaces, and remember to brush your tongue.
  • Flossing: Floss in between your teeth and gums once daily to remove food particles your toothbrush cannot reach. The Waipahu family dental clinic recommends using about 18 inches of floss and guiding it between your pearly whites using a gentle rubbing motion. Create a “C” shape with the floss when moving it between teeth and the gum line, and hold the floss tightly for best results.
  • Dentist Visits: See your dentist at least twice a year to ensure optimal dental care. Regular dental visits are a preventative measure that alert you to possible problems and current issues before they worsen, such as a cavity or gum disease. Keep in mind that cavities don’t hurt until they’re in severe stages, so don’t wait until you’re in pain to see your Waipahu dentist.

Dr. Valderueda will let you know if you require a mouth rinse as an additional component to your daily oral health regimen, and will make suggestions for other ways to take care of teeth and gums. These may include drinking more water and enjoying a healthy, low-sugar diet.
