Puppies and teenagers have something in common; both are prone to developing acne. Although acne usually goes away before your puppy is a year old, it can be a painful experience for your pet. Luckily, pet dermatologist J. Breen, DVM, ACVD, of Veterinary Dermatology Services offers treatments that will help clear your pet’s skin. Dr. Breen provides veterinary dermatology and pet allergy services to pets in Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southern Indiana.

Acne occurs when hair follicles become inflamed. If your puppy has acne, you may notice swollen red bumps or blackheads on the chin, lips or muzzle. Acne can be irritating, itchy, and painful. In an attempt to find relief, your pet may drag his head against carpeting or other rough surfaces. Unfortunately, this can break open pimples and lead to an infection and scarring.

A visit to Veterinary Dermatology Services can help clear up the problem if your puppy suffers from acne. Depending on the severity of the condition, several types of treatment may be offered, including:

  • Special Shampoo: The shampoo contains acne-fighting benzoyl peroxide and should be used twice per week. Although acne medications for people also contain benzoyl peroxide, don’t use these medications to treat your puppy. Human acne medications contain much stronger amounts of the ingredient and aren’t appropriate for pet use.
  • Benzoyl Peroxide Gel: Apply a thin coating of this gel to blemishes and blackheads.
  • Topical And Oral Antibiotics: Antibiotic gels and creams can help clear up acne. Oral antibiotics are usually only used if other methods aren’t effective. During your visit, the staff at Veterinary Dermatology Services will explain how to use any medication prescribed.
  • Topical Steroids: Topical steroid creams and gels can be helpful if your pet experiences swelling and inflammation.
