The health care professionals at StayFIT Physical Therapy in Kapolei and Aiea, Hawaii, have a passion for recovery, and they are fascinated by a recent study from the scientific journal BMC Health Services Research. Here, physical therapist researcher John D. Childs, PT, PhD, and his team present some interesting information: If acute, nonspecific low-back pain is treated with physical therapy shortly after injury, physical therapy will cost less and the patient will use fewer health care resources.

In this specific study, Childs and his team analyzed 122,723 patients. These patients had two things in common: They all went to a primary care physician after their lower back pain began, and they all started their physical therapy journeys within 90 days of their initial lower-back-pain episode.

Over a period of two years, these patients used significantly less health-care resources than patients who waited to begin physical therapy treatment. The patients who sought physical therapy within 90 days needed less lumbar spine surgery and used less opioids, lumbar spinal injections, and advanced imaging than other patients.

"Physical therapy as the starting point of care in your low back pain episode can have significant positive implications," Childs explained. "Receiving physical therapy treatment that adheres to practice guidelines even furthers that benefit."

The study that Childs and his team conducted in BMC Health Services Research is a powerful one. If you are experiencing low back pain, do not wait to see a health care professional.
