At Thameside ObGyn Centre in Groton, CT, the team of expert doctors and support staff is devoted to keeping women healthy with the best OB/GYN services available. Part of keeping women healthy is making sure they are informed with accurate information, and in honor of National Breast Cancer Month, the team would like to raise breast cancer awareness and ensure that all women are taking the necessary steps to be checked for breast cancer.

Breast cancer is one of the two most common cancers that American women develop (the other is skin cancer). Although age, being a woman, and having a history of breast cancer in your family increase your risk of developing this cancer, many women who get breast cancer have none of the risk factors. This, coupled with the fact that breast cancer may not necessarily be accompanied by the well-known warning signs (a lump in the breast, for example), makes it vital that all women take steps to get themselves checked for breast cancer by a healthcare professional.

This is particularly true for women who are over the age of 50. If you’re between 50 and 74 years old, the official recommendation is to have a mammogram once every two years. Women who are younger (between 40 and 49) should keep an open dialogue with their doctor about when to begin screening mammograms. Women below the age of 40 should provide a complete medical history to their doctor and see a local gynecologist at least once a year. Finally, all women should perform regular self-exams at home, and should report any changes or suspicious lumps to their doctor for further examination.

Breast cancer screening is just one of the many services provided by Thameside ObGyn Centre, a proud member of the Women’s Health Connecticut group of over 200 doctors, nurses, and midwives.
