In Illinois, the auto window tinting laws are based on what you drive. For passenger vehicles, the windshield can only be tinted six inches at the top. Side and rear windows cannot be darker than 35% VLT. For multipurpose vehicles like SUVs, vans, and buses, the windshield requirement is the same as a passenger vehicle, but the front-side windows cannot be darker than 50% VLT. Back-side and rear windows do not have limitations.

There are exceptions to the above rules. You can technically have any VLT on windows except the windshield, as long as the front-side windows are not tinted. If you choose 50% VLT on front-side windows, the rest of the windows behind the driver must be tinted higher than 30% VLT. For factory-installed auto window tinting on back windows, front-side windows need to be higher than 50%.

It is smart to note that if you have window tinting on your rear window, you must also have dual side mirrors so that you have strong visibility behind you. Illinois does not allow any reflective tinting.

There are medical exceptions to the rules. If you have xeroderma, pigmentosa, or porphyria, you can get special permission for a darker tint. Whenever you or any other drivers get in the vehicle, make sure to have your certificate proving that you applied for this exception.
