October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Main Street Radiology in Queens, New York is dedicated to supporting everyone who has been diagnosed with and treated for the disease. Since 1966, the private outpatient practice has served its community in four locations throughout New York—two in Bayside, one in Flushing, and one in Jackson Heights.

Radiation is used to diagnose internal diseases and treat them through multiple modalities like Mammography or Ultrasound. In order to diagnose breast cancer, Main Street Radiology uses multiple techniques like Mammography, 3D Mammography, Breast Ultrasound and even Breast MRI.

While The Rolling Stones released Exile On Main Street in 1972, they probably weren’t referencing the medical organization that predated their album or the radiation services they provide. However, frontman Mick Jagger famously reached out to ex-girlfriend and fellow musician Marianne Faithfull 30 years after the last time they spoke to wish her well when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. With that, here are seven female musicians who battled—and beat—breast cancer:

  • Grease star Olivia Newton John was diagnosed in 1992.
  • Folk singer Nanci Griffith was diagnosed in 1996.
  • Singer/songwriter Carly Simon was diagnosed in 1997.
  • Singer, guitarist, and activist Melissa Etheridge was diagnosed in 2004.
  • Aussie pop star Kylie Minogue was diagnosed in 2005.
  • Country/alternative singer Sheryl Crow was diagnosed in 2006.
  • English pop and rock singer Marianne Faithfull was diagnosed in 2007.

Of course, many other famous women have survived breast cancer, using their platforms as a means to raise funds and awareness to eradicate the disease. MSR is now performing Breast Biopsy on site.
