Tooth pain can be an indication of many things, but if it hasn't been caused by a recent injury, it has likely been building up for a while. While pain medications can only numb the pain temporarily, the surest way to discover and treat the cause is from a real dental exam. With the tools and expertise necessary to see between teeth and underneath gums, your dentist can locate the growing infection, abscess, or damage responsible for the pain. Pediatric Dental Group in Honolulu has put together these possible causes for why you might be suffering from a toothache:

  • Sports Injuries & Falls: These are the most obvious causes of tooth pain, and can be responsible for cracked or knocked out teeth. Consult your dentist as soon as possible, as well as your GP, as broken teeth are more prone to infection.
  • Abscesses: These are large infections, typically filled with liquid. Gums will often swell around an infection or abscess, causing significant pain, and the inflammation may also be accompanied by fever. Abscesses may require draining and antibiotics.
  • New Teeth: If a child or young adult experiences tooth or gum pain, it may be an indication that baby teeth are ready to come out and new teeth are on the way in. Wisdom teeth, especially, can be painful when they grow in; they often need to be removed if they're bound to grow in crooked.
  • Dry Sockets: If you've recently had a tooth pulled and are feeling pain in the tooth socket a few days after the operation, it might not be healing correctly.
