Gum disease is a complex oral health issue that develops when plaque collects below the gum line. It can coat teeth roots, and decay-causing bacteria may lead to tooth loss and tissue infections. If gum disease has become advanced, your dentist will likely recommend a root planing and scaling procedure to improve the issue. Here’s a closer look at this nonsurgical treatment option.

Your Guide to Scaling & Root Planing

Teeth Scaling

In a nutshell, scaling is a deeper version of the biannual teeth cleanings that everyone should have done. It’s an outpatient procedure involving nothing more than a local anesthetic.

During a teeth scaling procedure, your dentist will remove plaque from deep below the gum line near the tooth roots. Using deep cleaning tools, they’ll scrape plaque from the tooth and inside these pockets. A scaler tool will most often be used, though laser options are available at some practices.

Root Planing

dentistGum disease loosens teeth from their hold in your jawbone. To help them reattach, the dentist will perform a planing procedure, usually in the same appointment as the teeth scaling.

By smoothing the tooth base, it can then connect with healthy gum tissue. This is also an outpatient procedure. In the most severe cases of gum disease, the dentist may have to make an incision at the base of the gums to access the tooth root.

How to Manage Gum Disease

Gum disease prevention and management begin with brushing twice a day for two minutes and flossing daily. Focus on brushing along the gum line. Make sure you’re eating a diet low in sugary and acidic foods, and follow your dentist’s recommendations regarding visits to the office.
