Regular mammograms are an important part of maintaining female health and wellness, but many women aren’t quite sure when to start getting them, how often they should take place, or what to expect from a mammogram appointment. The medical professionals at Main Street Radiology in Queens created this FAQ guide called "Mammograms 101" to help inform women everywhere.

Answers to Mammogram FAQs, courtesy of Main Street Radiology:

  • When Should I Start Getting Mammograms? According to the radiologists at Main Street Radiology most women should start getting mammograms at age 50. For women who are high-risk, a single mammogram at age 40 or 45 to assess overall health and risk may be wise.
  • How Often Should I Get A Mammogram? Most women should get screened every other year, while women who are higher-risk should get screened annually. In general, if you don’t have a family history of breast cancer and have not undergone radiation therapy, you are considered average-risk.
  • How Should I Prepare For A Mammogram? The best way to prepare for a mammogram is to schedule it when you have low breast sensitivity (i.e. not during or immediately surrounding your menstrual cycle). Also, don't wear a lot of jewelry or any deodorant to the appointment, because you may be asked to remove both.
  • What Is A Mammogram Like? Most women describe mammograms as uncomfortable but not painful. Considering the fact that they significantly help with early cancer detection, the slight discomfort is well worth it.

When it comes to your health, mammograms play a crucial role in early-detection and recovery. To schedule a mammogram, MRI, or biopsy in New York, call Main Street Radiology at (718) 428-1500. Readers are also invited to visit them online for a full list of services and treatments.
