Dental care is important at any age, but it is especially crucial for children who need to learn good habits early and keep their teeth strong for the future. Regular dental exams can prevent emergency dental procedures, need for orthodontics, and, most importantly, gum disease. Gum disease is a common side effect of insufficient teeth cleaning -- for children and adults. To prevent it from affecting you and your family, here are some facts and tips about hygiene and gum disease.

  • Signs and Symptoms: The first sign of gum disease is usually bleeding gums when you try to floss or brush. The gums can also be red, swollen, and inflamed because of the bacterial infection that causes gum disease. In its advanced state, gum disease can lead to loss of teeth and other complications.
  • Causes: Gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth every day. Without regular care, it builds up and leads to more serious consequences. Smoking and an unhealthy diet can also lead to gum disease.
  • Prevention: Use floss or an interdental brush to clean between your teeth and remove some of the plaque that can lead to infection. Eat a balanced diet, exercise, and drink plenty of water. Regular dental hygiene and dental exams can eliminate the risk of gum disease as well.
