Ovarian cysts can vary widely in severity. Many are very small, cause minimal discomfort, and resolve on their own in a matter of months. But in more extreme cases, these cysts may rupture or require gynecologic surgery and cause significant pain along the way. At the Women’s Wellness Center of New York, Dr. Tara Shirazian and staff provide care for a wide variety of women’s health issues, including ovarian cysts.

Read on to learn more about this ovarian condition:

  • What They Are: An ovarian cyst is a sac that forms in the ovaries filled with a liquid or semi-liquid substance. Though they can cause discomfort and other health complications, most ovarian cysts are not cancerous.

  • Associated Symptoms: Cysts can cause a variety of symptoms, including pain, weight loss, the feeling of fullness, and pain during sexual intercourse. Abdominal distention, tenderness, and pain can also indicate the presence of cystic formations.
  • When They Form: Ovarian cysts can occur in females at any age, even during neonatal development. They often form during periods of high hormone production.
  • When It May Be An Emergency: See a doctor right away if you are experiencing sudden and severe pain in the abdomen or pelvis, fever, or any symptoms of shock, such as clammy skin or rapid breathing.
  • What’s Next: For many patients with simple cysts, treatment is not required and the cysts may resolve on their own. For others, a regimen of birth control pills or a gynecologic surgery may be appropriate. Every case is unique, and Dr. Tara Shirazian can offer guidance on your situation.
