For more than 30 years, Katz Family Dentistry has helped New York families maintain good dental health. Dr. Jeffrey Katz, a family dentist and staunch advocate for oral hygiene, knows that neglecting your teeth and gums can result in painful gum disease.

Plaque, a sticky yellow film that contains bacteria, builds up on the teeth and gums every day. If plaque isn’t removed, it can eventually cause gum disease. When treated early, the disease is reversible, but untreated gum disease can lead to tooth loss and the need for dentures or dental bridges.

These five tips can help you prevent gum disease:

  • Brush your teeth after every meal. Brushing removes plaque and food particles from your teeth, gums and tongue. Keep the brush at a 45 degree angle and use short, circular motions when you brush your teeth. Be sure to brush the area where your teeth meet your gums.
  • Use mouthwash every time you brush. Mouthwash does more than freshen your breath; it also can help reduce plaque.
  • Floss every day. Brushing alone doesn’t remove trapped food particles between the teeth.
  • Know the signs of gum disease. If your gums are red or swollen, or your teeth feel loose or bleed when you brush them, you may have gum disease. Early treatment is essential to preventing tooth loss.
  • See your dentist every six months. Regular teeth cleaning is the most important tool in the fight against gum disease. The dental care team at Katz Family Dentistry provides everything you need, from routine cleaning services to oral surgery, and their patient services are second to none.
