The ACT and SAT may seem like the same test with different names, but there are several key differences—some advantages and disadvantages, depending on individual strengths and weaknesses. Peach State Tutoring & Test Prep can help empower you and your child with the knowledge to make the choice between ACT and SAT testing—or to take both.

Here are three key differences between the two tests:

  • Test Style: The ACT tackles each subject in one large section—that is, once you’ve completed the math section, you’re done with math for the day. The SAT breaks the test into smaller sections, alternating between math and reading. Many test-takers find the alternation refreshing; others may find it jarring.
  • Subject Matter: The SAT tests mathematics and critical reading and includes a required writing section. The ACT tests mathematics, English, reading, and science, with an optional writing section. As a whole, SAT testing tends to be more vocabulary-centric, so students with verbal acuity and vocabulary strengths may excel on the SAT.
  • Penalties: Each test has a different approach to scoring. The SAT penalizes test-takers for wrong answers, so guessing is not advisable. On the ACT, however, your score is determined based on how many questions you get right, so it’s advantageous to guess if you’re running out of time.
