Dogs need to stay active! A sedentary lifestyle can lead to some potentially destructive behaviors, like excessive barking and whining, hyperactivity, nighttime rowdiness, and play biting. Like many of us, it can be hard for them to stay active without a little extra direction. The dog sitting experts at Robinwood Kennel in Highland Heights want you to know that you can help improve your dog's quality of life by exercising with him or her regularly.

If you’re looking to add to your dog’s activity levels, here are seven popular dog exercises you can use:

  • Brain Training: Practicing commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “shake” is a good way to keep your dog’s intelligence level high. If he or she has those down, teach him or her more complicated tasks and get those brain juices flowing.
  • Swimming: Dogs love swimming! It's also a great activity for arthritic dogs, who may have a harder time walking. Make a game out of it by having him fetch a ball or other floating object.
  • Fetch: What dog doesn't enjoy a good game of fetch? Even small dogs appreciate a good ball game.
  • Dog Power Walking: A brisk stroll around the block or through the park is a great way to get your dog's heart rate accelerated a little each day.
  • Jogging: This is great for dogs that are already in shape. Don't rush an out-of-shape dog into extended jogging, as he or she will get fatigued very quickly.
  • Obstacle Courses: Find a local dog training facility that offers agility training and have them help you set up an obstacle course that can help you keep your dog in tiptop shape, mentally and physically.
  • Hide & Seek: Hide your dog's favorite treats in interesting locations and make him or her work for them.
