Periodontal disease is an oral disease of the gums in which they are weakened and begin to bleed. If the disease goes untreated, it can develop into a more serious problem and you could experience bone loss. Fortunately, the office of Brian S. Kubo, DDS is dedicated to keeping the oral health of patients in great condition, and treating periodontal disease is a service the practice offers.

During regular checkups, patients will undergo a periodontal examination. The dentist will use a small probe to determine if the space between the teeth and gums is too large and if there is bleeding.

Periodontal disease begins with gingivitis, formed from a buildup of plaque that irritates the gums. If periodontal disease is left untreated, the plaque becomes tarter and causes pockets between the teeth. As it advances, there will be severe inflammation, along with other oral problems.

When Dr. Kubo treats periodontal disease in patients, he must first determine the severity of the disease. If it’s just in the early stages, the patient will only need to come in for a few regular cleanings. If the disease has become more problematic, Dr. Kubo will recommend a deeper cleaning called scaling and root planning.

One of the most important things to do when you have periodontal disease or gingivitis is to brush your teeth very regularly. At least twice a day is a must, as plaque can build up on the teeth quickly. Once you have completed your immediate treatment for periodontal disease, you should revisit Dr. Kubo’s office several times a year for cleanings and to ensure your teeth are in good condition.
