While pets may enjoy some human-food handouts, many delicious treats are very dangerous for their health. The veterinarians at Waipio Pet Clinic in Waipahu, HI have over 75 years of combined experience, and in that time they've seen a lot of sick animals come into their pet hospital because they were unknowingly poisoned.

Poison may seem like a harsh word, but particular human foods are toxic for animals. Waipio Pet Clinic encourages animal wellness in all forms, so they put together a list of human foods that are harmful for your pet:

  • Chocolate & Coffee: Cacao seeds contain methylxanthines, which can result in abnormal heart rhythm, hyperactivity, excessive thirst and urination, vomiting, tremors, seizures, and sometimes even death.
  • Avocado: Every part of an avocado, from its bark to its seed, contains persin. This will cause vomiting and diarrhea in your dog, and if a bird or rodent eats it, then fluid can accumulate around the heart.
  • Grapes & Raisins: These can cause kidney failure in your pet, even though they are nutritious for us.
  • Onion, Garlic, & Chive: Red blood cell damage can occur, as well as gastrointestinal irritation.
  • Salt: Salt can lead to excessive thirst and urination. In large amounts it can even result in tremors, seizure, and sometimes even death.

If you know that your pet has recently eaten any of these foods, please contact Waipio Pet Clinic immediately. They have emergency vets who will be able to answer questions and treat your pet.
