The experienced teachers at A Brighter Rainbow Learning Center in Billerica, MA know first-hand how important fine motor skills development is for young children. As one of the area’s most prestigious preschool learning centers, the staff takes pride in helping your little ones enter elementary school feeling prepared and confident.

Fine motor skills are a major factor in how easily kids transition from preschool and kindergarten to first grade. Kids with underdeveloped fine motor skills often have great difficulty writing, drawing, using scissors, and completing crafts. The good news is that parents have a lot of power over how early and how often their children practice fine motor skills. The staff at A Brighter Rainbow Learning Center recommends incorporating some of these fun activities into your child’s regular playtime to help them succeed in preschool and beyond:

  • Jewelry Making Day: Surprise your little ones with pipe cleaners and a wide array of colorful plastic beads. Chitchat while you string beads and create fun wearable art.
  • Cook Up a Storm: Cooking- and baking-related prep work is a great way to work on fine motor skills. Have your little chef start with easy things like stirring, kneading dough, and—of course—taste testing!
  • Finger Paint Panel: Grab a poster board and some finger paint and create a one-of-a-kind piece that you can hang in your kiddo’s room.
  • Marshmallow People: Smoosh together marshmallows of different sizes with toothpicks to create your own little marshmallow people.
  • Mask Making Day: All it takes is construction paper, hole punch, some twine, and a little imagination to create silly, scary, and wacky masks. Using scissors, gluing small objects, and drawing are all great ways to work on fine motor skills.
