When you install ceiling fans in your business, you can save considerable amounts of both energy and money. This is welcome news as we become more aware of the environmental stressors we face, as well as the impact skyrocketing energy use has on our bottom line. Quantum Electric has been the Austin area's leading electrician for 25 years, and its energy management and service specialists share a few tips for getting the most out of your fan:

  • Buy a fan with the appropriate blade angle. For a fan to be its most energy efficient, the angle of the blades should never be less than 12 inches. If it is installed in a room like an office or supply room—any room where there is an abundance of loose paper present—the blade should be between 12 and 14 inches. In all other spaces, a blade angle of 14 inches or more will help you save energy and money while staying comfortable.
  • Choose the right size fan. This might seem like a no-brainer, but it is fairly common to see fans that are far too small for the rooms they're in. For a fan to adequately cool a room, it needs to be large enough to circulate air throughout the entire space. Choose your size accordingly.
  • Use the appropriate settings based on the time of year. In summer, make sure your fan blades are generating a breeze; this is usually the counterclockwise setting, but test it out to make sure. You want the air blowing downward. Also, you might want to raise the temperature in the room a few degrees since the fan will be making up for the difference. In winter, switch to the opposite fan mode (usually clockwise), so the air is blowing in a more upward direction; this circulates warmer air and keeps temperatures comfortable. And always turn fans off when your business is closed or no one is utilizing the room.
