Thomas, KY, wants to help you have the best summer possible making sure you know how to perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) or use an AED (automated external defibrillator).

They know that any day can turn into a disaster if you’re not prepared. In order to keep every day of swimming fun as safe as possible, they suggest following these important swimming safety tips from the Red Cross:

  • Only swim in designated areas that have lifeguards.
  • Never swim alone. A buddy or family member can save your life.
  • Always keep an eye on your children around water.
  • For young children, use the appropriate safety gear such as a life vests, water wings or floaties.
  • Take a health training or first aid certification course to prepare for emergencies.
  • Enroll your entire family in swimming technique courses.
  • Avoid distractions around water to avoid accidents.
  • Know how and when to call 9-1-1.
  • If a child is missing, check the water first. It only takes seconds to save a life and prevent drowning.
  • Keep appropriate equipment nearby, such as a life jacket, an AED system, a cell phone, and a first aid kit.
