Are you ready? It’s time to talk about the quilting style of the month from The Maui Quilt Shop. This month’s focus is T-shirt quilts. The quilting experts at Kihei’s only quilt shop know that when it comes time to toss T-shirts you haven’t worn in a long time, it can be very tough to throw them out. A T-shirt quilt will allow you hold on to your favorite shirts without having them take up space in your closet.

T-shirt quilting is a fairly easy process and requires only basic quilting experience. To make the process even easier, the quilt professionals at The Maui Quilt Shop have laid out the process in seven easy steps:

  1. Gather The Shirts: The very first thing you have to do is find the shirts you want to turn into a quilt.
  2. Choose a Quilt Design: After you’ve gathered the shirts you want to use, you need to figure out the design you want for your quilt. T-shirt quilts, like all other quilts, are made to be creative, and you want your quilt to commemorate your T-shirts in the best possible way.
  3. Support The Logo: Use a fusible interfacing to keep the logo or design from stretching or skewing. The interfacing is usually cotton, so it won’t stick but it will provide an extra layer of support onto the t-shirt so it will not have the “jersey” feel to it.
  4. Measure: Once you’ve strengthened the areas, measure the sizes of each logo so you can fit it into the measurements of the quilt.
  5. Cut: Once you’ve measured properly, you can cut the t-shirts to the size you want.
  6. Sew: After you’ve measured and cut your shirts to the correct size, you can start sewing your pieces together. After the pieces are joined, choose a suitable backing fabric that complements the joined T-shirt front.
  7. Enjoy: After you’ve completed all the steps, take the time to admire your quilt and reminisce about some of the experiences memorialized on the quilt.

Now you’ve created something useful as well as cleared up some storage space. If you’re feeling bogged down with T-shirts, don’t throw them out—repurpose them.
