There is an unfortunate old adage that says “Cats take care of themselves.” While cats are often aloof or free-spirited, that is not a license to ignore your cat's health. Just like dogs or any other member of the family, cats need love and attention toward their well-being—whether they act like it or not. Waipio Pet Clinic in Waipahu, HI has over 75 years of combined experience caring for animals. Call the team the next time you need help with any of these three animal wellness tips:

  • Upkeep hair and nails. Brushing has so many benefits for short-haired and long-haired animals: It keeps their coats free of debris, reduces shedding and matting, and alerts you to the presence of fleas or other skin problems. Periodically clipping your cat or dog's claws— not de-clawing—is a good way to keep growth under control, though it can be difficult to learn; a veterinarian or pet groomer can help. Too many pet owners ignore their cats' fur, thinking cats keep themselves clean. But even a cat's rough tongue can't untangle a matted coat. Start brushing and clipping when they're young so they can get used to it.
  • Take preventative action against pests. Kittens can actually inherit pests from their mothers, including ear mites and fleas. From the time of adoption, pay close attention to your pet's body for anything that looks like a parasite, and schedule a veterinary appointment. Don't ignore something because you think it's “normal.” Just because fleas are common doesn't mean they're benign.
  • Schedule yearly checkups. Just like humans, pets benefit from regular checkups at the doctor. More frequent appointments may be necessary if your pet has known health issues.
