If you’re just starting a new career in real estate, you’ll quickly learn that clients will come to you for advice. Should I paint this room? Should I have more than one open house? But you might not expect them to ask you how to stay organized as they move. This is good real estate agent investor training for anyone—even those looking into commercial real estate. At some point, everyone has to move from point A to point B, and they’ll look to a realtor from some packing tips.

EXIT Realty Upper Midwest has been in the real estate and investment game long enough to have plenty of tips and tricks under its belt. Here are some of the company's best tips:

  • Start early. Two months before any move, assess what you’d like to keep and what you’d like to get rid of. Make special note of any items that need special packing or even extra insurance.
  • Research and record. As you look for moving companies and the best deals, keep track of all moving transactions. Keep an inventory of everything you are moving.
  • Order supplies. Do this one month prior and check dimensions of your new space. Then confirm arrangements and begin packing.
  • Begin packing. Pack what you use least first. Label the boxes so you know which room they belong in. Separate any valuables from the packing list. You’ll want to see that these are personally attended to on moving day.
  • Reconfirm. Two weeks before, reconfirm all moving day arrangements, change your address and other relevant information (medical records, school records, etc.).
  • Last minute checks. A few days before, double check all necessary arrangements, your inventory and whether you paid the moving company. Also pack a few days worth of clean clothes (if it’s a residential move).
  • Day of. Finally, on move-in day, verify your moving company has arrived. Transport to the new location and begin to verify with your inventory list that the items have all arrived.
