What Does it Take to Become Certified to Provide Commercial Locksmith Services?, 4, Maryland

Thanks to increased construction of commercial and residential properties, the number of locksmith job openings is expected to grow to 24,800 by 2018, according to the U.S Bureau of Labor and Statistics. Locksmiths who are certified, like those employed by Pick Lock & Key, carry high professional standards that are recognized by top industry groups.

There are several certification designations set by the Associated Locksmiths of America Inc., and the Safe and Vault Technicians Association. They include Certified Automotive Locksmith (CAL), Certified Master Locksmith (CML), Certified Professional Locksmith (CPL), Registered Locksmith (RL), Certified Professional SafeTech (CPS) and Certified Master SafeTech (CMST).

Through testing and participation tracking, the Proficiency Registration Program is available to all locksmiths to evaluate the educational and technical competencies in a number of areas such as general locksmithing, auto locksmith services, and specialty locksmithing. The Safe Technicians Proficiency Registration Program tackles electronic access control and safe and vault services, among other areas.

Depending on the locksmith designation, the program’s classroom hours, courses, passing grades and categories will vary. However, all of the certification exams for the Proficiency Registration Program consist of 36 categories, with 10 being mandatory. The required exam categories are:

  • Codes and Code Equipment
  • Cylinder Servicing
  • Key Blank Identification
  • Key Duplication
  • Key Impressioning
  • Professional Lock Opening Techniques
  • Lockset Functions
  • Lockset Servicing
  • Basic Master Keying
  • Cabinet, Furniture, and Mailbox Locks

A 250-question test covers the 10 mandatory categories and must be passed with a cumulative score of 70%. Elective exams contain 25 and 40 questions, make up the remaining 26 categories and are selected on a locksmith’s area of specialization. To pass, the locksmith must earn at least a 70% on each elective test.

The highest certification level for a locksmith is Certified Master Locksmith and is achieved with a 70% grade on 90% of the total categories tested.
