Sending your little one off to their first day of preschool can be a daunting concept, but preparing thoroughly for the big day will help everything go much smoother. Plus, if you’re relaxed and ready, your kiddo will follow suit! The dedicated childcare experts at Northern Lights Preschool & Child Care in Anchorage, AK have helped hundreds of kids and parents adjust to preschool.

They created this handy checklist so you can make sure you have everything you need for the first day of school:

  • Gather everything you need a week before: At least a week before the program begins, buy and organize everything your child will need. This typically includes a backpack, lunch box, water bottle, sunscreen, diapers and wipes (if necessary), blanket, and a spare change of clothes in a bag (just in case).
  • Get to know the rules: Differently licensed daycares have different standards and rules on what kids are allowed to bring to the program. For example, some schools have banned nuts in lunches and snacks due to allergy concerns. And while certain prekindergarten classes allow children to bring a small stuffed animal, others do not. Check out the handbook before the first day arrives.
  • Labels, labels, labels: Label everything! Kids' stuff all looks alike and energetic little ones tend to mix up whose stuff is whose. You might think you’re going overboard by labeling backpacks, hats, mittens, and blankets, but you’re not. When in doubt, label it.

Follow these easy steps and your little one will be ready for anything on the first day of school. For more preschool ideas, planning tips, and enrollment information, call Northern Lights Preschool & Child Care at (888) 688-8794
