During the early ‘80’s, folks didn’t just tune into The Dukes of Hazzard to admire Daisy Duke’s curves in those short-shorts. They also watched the show for the classic cars.

One of the staple vehicles was The General Lee, a ’69 Dodge Charger that was known for its signature horn, stunts, police chases, and welded doors—leaving the Dukes having to climb in and out through the window. This month, Charlotte AutoFair Produced by Hornets Nest Region, AACA celebrates the epic 1969 Dodge Charger.

Debuting at a car show in 1964, the Charger soon gained national popularity for its two-door fastback body design and sleek curves. The second generation of the Charger was released in 1969, and sales increased. The model years underwent several cosmetic changes, including rounded tail lights, hidden headlights, and an undivided grill. A more aerodynamic shape dubbed the Charger 500 model would become the basis for the ’69 Dodge Charger Daytona.

The 1969 Charger gained worldwide popularity when it became the star of The Dukes of Hazard. On average, more than one General Lee was used per show, and Warner Bros. eventually moved the building of the cars in-house to keep it consistent in appearance. Approximately 17 original ones exist in various states of repair.
