Recycling is a big part of maintaining a clean home or office: it means less trash to deal with, and therefore a contribution to a greener planet. However, it isn’t always easy to distinguish between what can and cannot be recycled!

Rather than throwing everything in a recycling bin and hoping for the best, take cues from the amazing staff at Mumz Cleaning Service in Port Monmouth, NJ. This trusted commercial and residential cleaning service has a wealth of knowledge about recycling, and is always happy to share their best tips and advice.

Check out their handy guide on what you can recycle, and what you can’t:

Paper

All office paper, white paper, and colored paper is recyclable; so are newspapers, magazines, catalogs, phone books, junk mail, paper towel and toilet paper rolls, and shredded paper. Tissue boxes, folders, cardboard, and paper juice and milk cartons are also acceptable.

You cannot recycle the following paper products:

  • Paper towels
  • Napkins
  • Tissue paper
  • Wrapping paper
  • Wax paper
  • Paper contaminated by bodily fluid

Glass

Clear and colored glass bottles and containers are all recyclable. This includes wine and beer bottles, and glass food containers.

Do not recycle:

  • Mirror glass
  • Lightbulbs
  • Crystal
  • Window glass
  • Ceramic

Metal

Aluminum cans, foils, and containers are recyclable, as are metal beverage and food containers. Metal pots and similar kitchen cookware wins the recycling prize as well.

Refrain from recycling:

  • Paint cans
  • Motor oil cans
  • Metal and cardboard containers

Plastic

Plastic food and beverage containers, personal care product bottles, clean grocery/retail bags, and all plastics numbered 1 through 7 are acceptable for recycling. Deli-style and clam-style takeout containers are also accepted.

Avoid recycling the following:

  • Plastic tableware
  • Styrofoam containers
  • Plastic baggies
