There will be times when your kids resist brushing their teeth. You want them to learn healthy oral habits, but you don’t want it to be an unpleasant experience. Pedodontic Associates provides pediatric dentist services to the Honolulu, Maui, and Oahu communities, and they have a few tips on how to promote a brushing routine they’ll like.

What can you do to encourage your children to brush their teeth regularly?

  • Lead by example. Let your children see how you take care of your teeth. When you brush your teeth, have your kids brush theirs at the same time. You can also show them videos and pictures of other children close to their age who enjoy brushing their teeth.
  • Make it creative. Use the time to tell them a story using the elements of brushing. A train tunnel (the mouth) is being made, but the workmen have to use tools (the toothbrush) to get the rocks (the plaque) out of the way before the train can go through. You can also try singing songs and have your child brush during the chorus.
  • Use fun items. Have your child pick out toothbrushes in their favorite colors or printed with cartoon characters so they will see the toothbrush as a fun tool. Let your kids choose a flavored toothpaste, and make their brushing time something they will look forward to.

Teach your kids the importance of good brushing habits and regular visits to the children's dentist. Call Pedodontic Associates at (808) 487-7933 to schedule a checkup.
