When you’re just starting to learn how to quilt, the fundamentals of quilting can seem daunting. The Maui Quilt Shop in Kihei, HI, has several tips for you to get more comfortable with basic quilting.

To start, choose easy quilt patterns made with large pieces. When you’re working on a project, larger pieces will come together much more quickly, as there are fewer pieces to sew together.

Next, choose patterns that use squares and rectangles. Square and rectangular pieces are the easiest shapes to sew together. When you begin venturing into the world of other shapes, you might have issues with triangles; triangles sewn together can leave stretchy bias edges that are no fun to fix, especially when you’re just learning how to sew them in the first place!

Then, choose a quilt pattern made with pre-cuts. Pre-cuts are pre-packaged fabrics cut into different sizes. If you choose a pattern based on the pre-cut package, you’ll save a lot of time cutting your own pieces of fabric to sew, and a lot of the quilting work is already done for you. Much like buying pre-cut vegetables at the grocery store, all the prep work is done and all you need to focus on is making the best quilt design you can!

Lastly, take a class! The quilt shop offers beginner’s classes that will help you learn quilting and the needleturn applique technique. The best part of taking classes is that if you have a question, the instructor can help you right away and point out specific ways to make things easier for you. Don’t be shy! They’re there to help.

If you’re in the market for a new hobby, come to The Maui Quilt Shop to sign up for a class today! For quilting made easy, call them at (808)-874-8050 today, or visit them online to see some of their quilts for inspiration.
