May is nationally acknowledged as Mental Health month, but the experts at Kona Community Hospital strive to raise awareness all year long by providing excellent care to patients throughout the community. For mental health patients who struggle to succeed in outpatient treatment programs, Kona Hospital offers in-patient care in their Behavioral Health Unit. With 11 single occupancy rooms and a multidisciplinary team, this unit is able to give each patient personalized attention.

As part of their continued efforts to provide those who struggle with mental illness a sense of compassion and care, Kona Community Hospital offers the following services:

  • Self-Care Enhancement: As part of the rehabilitation process, the mental health care team in the Behavioral Health Unit works to help patients develop better self-care skills. Typically, self-care enhancement includes the cultivation of self-initiated behaviors that enable patients to better assess their own health and wellness.
  • Symptom Stabilization: Symptoms can be debilitating for many mental health patients. At Kona Hospital, patients learn the steps they need to take in order to keep their symptoms under control. These steps can include learning to take medication regularly, developing techniques to control mood swings and other behavioral issues, and avoiding triggers that may contribute to their symptoms.
  • Community Re-Integration: The main goal of the Behavioral Health Unit is to help patients develop the skills they need to live healthy, functional lives. Patients learn to overcome the obstacles and challenges of everyday life so they are prepared to re-integrate into their communities after they’ve completed the program.
