You suspect you have a bug problem, but how do you know for sure? When do you need to call an exterminator? Atlantic Pest Control has been providing pest control services to the Atlantic, IA community for almost 30 years, and they want to share the signs of an infestation.

What kind of infestations are there and what should you look for?

  • Cockroaches. Since cockroaches prefer the dark, seeing one during the day is rare. If you do spot one in the daytime, it may signal a problem. You should also be on the lookout for roach feces, which look similar to coffee grounds or black pepper. They also prefer dark, moist areas to hide and breed, so you may find them near sinks, refrigerators, and floor drains.
  • Bedbugs. If you wake in the mornings with bite marks, this is a sign you may have bedbugs. They will leave black fecal stains that will not come off when rubbed, but will smear when wiped with a wet rag. Check your bed for bedbugs by closely inspecting your sheets, mattress, and box spring. Even with a visual inspection it can be hard to tell if you an infestation, so the best method in treating a bedbug issue would be to call an exterminator for an evaluation.
  • Termites. This can be a serious problem since termites not only feed on the wood in your home, but they can cause structural damage that can lead to expensive repairs. Damage from termites can look similar to water damage; your floors and ceilings may look swollen and your walls may buckle. You may also mistake a termite problem for water damage since the infestation can smell similar to mildew or mold. Termite issues are often discovered when it’s too late. If you suspect you have termites, call an exterminator immediately for termite control.

An infestation is not only a nuisance, but it can cause health issues for you and your family. Termites can spread mold that can lead to allergies and skin diseases. Scratching itchy bedbug bites can result in secondary skin conditions. Cockroaches will spread allergies and contaminate food.
