It’s never too early to begin proper dental habits. Visiting the pediatric dentist by your child’s first birthday will establish a strong dental hygiene foundation throughout adulthood, according to the dentists at Pediatric Dental Group, who have been practicing pediatric dentistry in Honolulu, HI since 1966.

Brush up on these basics three times a day to keep your family’s teeth bright and healthy:

  • Brush to the beat: Brushing takes at least two minutes, or the length of one song. Turn on the radio and make brushing fun for everyone. Using gentle strokes, angle your brush at 45 degrees and brush the inner and outer surfaces of your teeth. Dentists recommend a soft-bristled brush to gently remove plaque and food particles, and a small-headed brush is great for hard-to-reach areas. Electric toothbrushes are suggested for those with limited dexterity. And remember to replace your brush every three months, or when you notice visible wear, to avoid germ build-up!
  • Toothpaste for a great aftertaste: There are a variety of toothpastes based on taste and cleaning preferences. Toothpastes are designed to freshen breath while targeting conditions like gingivitis, tartar, and sensitivity. Find the right paste for your taste.
  • Floss like a boss: Your toothbrush may miss food particles that flossing can catch. Take charge! Use 18 centimeters of floss, and wrap it around your index finger and gently insert between teeth. Gently pull the floss back and forth between all of your teeth, starting from the gum line.
  • Seal with a rinse: For children who are able to, use a fluoride mouthwash to help seal the work you do with brushing and flossing and reduce the risk of cavities.

With strong dental habits at home, you and your dentist will be smiling every six months for your visit. Schedule an appointment today at Pediatric Dental Group by calling (808) 593-8828, or visit their website for more information.
