Picture this: it’s a beautiful sunny day and you’re looking forward to a long drive on the open road. The wind is blowing in your hair, you’re feeling fantastic, and then BAM -- out of the blue -- your car breaks down on the highway and you enter into full-blown panic mode. While it’s never fun to visualize the day this takes place, chances are you will experience some car issues at some point in your life. If you want the inside scoop on what to do when your car does break down, read on so you can be armed and ready with all the tools and tips you need to stay safe in the face of unexpected emergencies.
Pull Over - Assuming that your car is still driveable after a breakdown, make sure to immediately pull over to the side of the road so that you won’t be in danger of getting hit by a passing vehicle. Once you are pulled over, pull the emergency brake and turn on your hazards lights.
Call AAA - In times of emergency, AAA can be your best bet to get your car taken care of as fast as possible (or your insurer, if you maintain towing and rental coverage). Whether you need it towed or require some other roadside assistance, they are here to help you.
Stay inside - It may be tempting to get out of your car to look for help or get some air, but it’s important to stay inside the vehicle so that you can avoid getting hit by speeding cars that are barreling down the highway.
Pop Up Hood - Make sure to pop your hood once you have safely pulled over to the side of the road to let other drivers know that your car has broken down.
Set Up Flares - It's also a good idea to set up some flares behind your car and another one several feet ahead of it, since it is another way of alerting drivers that you’re dealing with a vehicular emergency.
