If you’re like most, you’ve had to have some dental work done; maybe you required composite fillings in a molar or you needed a root canal. But the question remains: What is it that can damage a smile? Well, according to Dr. Kubo, whose Kamuela, HI practice, Brian S. Kubo, DDS, specializes in general procedures, cosmetic dentistry and oral surgery, a number of the culprits here are shockingly commonplace.

So what are they? Here are three big ones:

  • Smoking: You’re probably aware of the dangers of smoking to your heart and lungs, but tobacco smoke not only stains teeth, it can cause significant damage to them and the gums. This means that, in addition to bad breath, a smoking habit can lead to increased decay and prevalence of gum disease.
  • Sodas/Sugary Drinks: Sure, that energy drink might help you get through the afternoon, but it also leaves a number of sugars in the mouth. Damaging disease and decay-causing bacteria love it as much as you do; so if you must, be sure to brush after drinking one.
  • Lack of Dental Hygiene: This one is pretty obvious, but poor dental hygiene can make all of the difference. It is recommended that you brush twice a day and floss once a day. Having good habits here will prove crucial to the long-term health of your teeth.

Since many dental conditions can go unnoticed, Dr. Kubo recommends that you go in for a check-up and cleaning one to two times a year, even if you have good teeth. Of course, if you are on the big island, then there’s no practice more qualified to leave you truly smiling than Brian S. Kubo, DDS.
