After passing driver’s education courses, many people forget the different meanings behind all the traffic signs they pass by on the road. Each sign shape and color has a specific meaning designed to alert drivers of changes in road conditions to keep everyone safe. Below is a brief guide to what four common traffic sign shapes and colors mean.

What Different Traffic Sign Shapes & Colors Mean

1. Red

Red is a highly visible color often associated with urgency, which is why it is typically used on traffic signs that indicate drivers need to take immediate action. With a red sign, you know to make a full stop at an intersection, let other vehicles pass, or avoid certain areas altogether.

2. Diamond

Diamond-shaped traffic signs are used to indicate a change in road conditions, such as icy patches, unpaved sections, and low shoulders. Often, drivers won’t know of the road condition until they approach. With these signs, you’ll know to make the necessary speed adjustments to prevent spinouts or vehicle damage.

3. Yellow

This way, drivers know to slow down to avoid danger. The signs are also stationed in school districts and areas with wildlife to reduce the risk of accidentally hitting an animal or child while driving by.

4. Circle

Although often stationed in fewer places than other markers, circle-shaped signs are prevalent in areas with railroad systems. The sign lets drivers know to proceed with caution when approaching the tracks. It is particularly helpful in portions of the track that don’t have light signals for approaching trains.
