An outdoor awning shields you from heat and precipitation. Awnings make sitting in the sunshine more enjoyable, especially if the coverage is over an eating or recreational area. For commercial buildings, an awning provides shade for your storefront and helps regulate temperatures inside your business. Because of their exposure to the outside world, fabric awnings need regular maintenance to remain in top shape. Here are a few tips for spot cleaning tough stains.

How to Spot Clean a Fabric Awning

Materials & Supplies

Some fabric awnings can be removed from their base and run through a washing machine for a thorough cleaning. It may be easier, however, to spot clean your outdoor awning without taking it off. Be sure to brush off any debris like twigs or leaves, and clear out cobwebs, which become harder to remove when wet.

To spot clean a fabric awning, you will need Clorox® and Ivory® soap flakes, or Ivory Snow laundry detergent. You will also need about a gallon of lukewarm water. Avoid boiling water and the hot drying cycle of laundry machines—high temperatures can cause shrinking or damage to the material.

Steps & Tips

Make a solution of half a cup of Clorox, half a cup of Ivory flakes, and the lukewarm water. Soak the fabric awning in the mixture and let it stand for about twenty minutes, or until the stains and dirt disappear. Rinse with warm water to remove soap residue.

Give it another rinse and let the fresh air dry the fabric. For tougher stains, you can do another round of soaking, but be sure to rinse any residue thoroughly.
