It’s easy to allow your storage space to become a mess of forgotten items that barely get used anymore. Fortunately, there are some simple ways to make your storage rental work functionally for your family. You can, for example, practice smart seasonal storage switches. Here’s what you need to know to make an efficient seasonal storage swap.

At the Start of Winter

When the weather starts to cool off, put your summer items into storage and take out the family’s winter necessities. Climate-controlled storage will protect your summer items, such as pool floats, grills, fire pits, outdoor furniture, bicycles, gardening items, and summer sports equipment. Make sure all your summer supplies are completely clean before storing them. Wash off dirt, sand, sunscreen, and especially salt, which can corrode your items over the coming months.

If your family owns a boat, a storage rental is an ideal place to keep it during the winter months, too. In addition to taking up lots of space in your yard or driveway, your boat will be vulnerable to freezing temperatures and theft. To prepare it for climate-controlled and secure storage, change the filters, flush the system, and top off the fuel supply. Check that the battery is fully charged, and wash off all saltwater to avoid corrosion.

When Spring Begins

If your family has a lot of bulky winter gear, such as snow boots, parkas, and heavy winter bedding, you can free up tons of space in your home by storing these, too. As a precaution, put them in moth-resistant bags or containers for the summer months.

Maximize space in your storage unit by utilizing space-saving solutions, such as vacuum bags for clothing, bedding, and sleeping bags, and group objects according to size, with smaller items at the front of your storage rental. Consider making a floor plan map of your unit so you know where each item belongs for easy access the next winter.
