Liquor and spirits are terms that can be used synonymously. With that said, you wouldn’t say you’re going to the spirits store. If you enjoy learning about alcoholic beverages, below is a brief introduction to what spirits are and how they became known by that name.

What Are Spirits?

liquorSpirits and liquor are the same things. All alcoholic drinks are made by fermenting a sugary concoction into ethanol and carbon dioxide. To get higher alcohol concentration, this blend has to be distilled–which is the process of separating the water from the rest. Spirits are distilled and have a higher alcohol content than other types of alcohol, usually 20% or higher.

Here is a list of the most common spirits you’ll find in the United States:

  • Gin
  • Vodka
  • Rum
  • Whiskey
  • Tequila
  • Brandy

It’s important not to confuse liquor and spirits with liqueur. Liqueur is a sweetened and flavored type of alcohol. Liqueurs are enjoyed in small quantities, usually after dinner as a dessert or digestive.

Why Do We Call Liquor “Spirits”?

There is no official explanation as to why liquor is referred to as “spirits.” During the middle ages, European monks believed that they were removing the spirit during the distilling process. In fact, some whiskey drinkers in Europe still pour the first shot onto the ground to let the angels have their share.
