Customized shirts are a fantastic way to show off your personality, support local artists, or advertise a company or cause. But custom apparel requires special care to maintain its look and fit. Aurora Projekt in Juneau, AK, is a local custom apparel shop supplying high-quality Southeast Alaskan threads. The staff offers their four tips for caring for customized shirts and other apparel.
4 Tips to Maintain Graphic T-Shirts
1. Use Cold Water Only
Screen-printed customized shirts must be washed in cold water only. Otherwise, the design may crack or fade. Also, use a gentle detergent and avoid mixing your custom clothes with rough fabrics, such as jackets or jeans.
2. Clean Inside Out
Turn your customized shirt inside out to protect the artwork or embroidery. This will protect it from unnecessary exposure to detergent and contact with the machine. Even better, put it inside out inside of a pillowcase. Use the same technique when ironing.
3. Hang It Up to Dry
Customized shirts should be dried on delicate, low settings. Using high-heat settings could cause damage to the artwork or shrinkage. You can also hang and air-dry your shirts for extra protection. To prevent the neck from stretching, use two hangers inside of each shirt when air-drying.
4. Avoid Ironing
Heat is one of the most potentially damaging elements for graphic T-shirts. Although you can iron them inside out as described above, it’s best to avoid the iron altogether if possible. Hang it in the bathroom while you take a hot bath or shower or spray it with water to smooth wrinkles.
With proper care, your favorite custom apparel can last for years to come.
