The battery is like a car’s heart, pumping electrical energy to the engine to get the vehicle up and running. According to the auto repair technicians at Stillwater Auto Clinic in Stillwater, MN, regular battery maintenance is necessary to prevent equipment overheating, vehicle stall-outs, and additional problems. Below, Stillwater’s auto repair pros share their best advice to keep the car battery healthy.

3 Car Battery Maintenance Tips

1. Clean the Cables

auto-repairHydrogen gas is released from the acid in the car battery, which collects on the cables over time. Using a nonmetallic brush and baking soda and water solution, clean the corrosion from the top of the battery and cables. Next, flush the area with cold water. Once the surfaces are clean, disconnect the wires and use a post cleaner to wipe away grime buildup around the terminals.

2. Check Electrolyte Levels

The electrolytes are a mixture of water and acid in the battery that helps maintain a stable electrical charge. The electrolyte level should go to the bottom of the fill hole. If it doesn’t, add clean, distilled water — making sure the liquid doesn’t overfill the battery cells. Give the water a few hours to mix with the electrolyte before turning on the battery.

3. Examine Battery Charge

After the electrolyte level is restored, examine whether the battery can maintain a charge. With the battery calibrated at 80°Fuse a hydrometer to test each cell’s electrolyte. Write down the readings for each cell. The numbers should be similar. If there’s a discrepancy of .05 degrees or more, it could be time for battery replacement.
