Just because your child has reached the average age to enter preschool doesn’t always mean they’re ready to do so. There are important social and developmental benchmarks that need to be achieved first. High Point Friends School in Guilford County, NC, wants to ensure your child gets the most out of their preschool environment, so they’ve assembled a few indicators that he or she is ready to enroll.

3 Ways to Tell If Your Child Is Ready for Preschool

1. Emotional Maturity

One of the most important indicators of preschool readiness occurs when a child demonstrates clear emotional independence throughout the day. They should be able to say goodbye to a parent or babysitter without spending the whole afternoon in tears. Being a little apprehensive is alright, but if they cry for hours until the person returns, they’re likely not ready for preschool yet. To help your child deal with such emotions at home, try teaching them to express how they feel through words, and work on their emotional triggers.

2. Independence

preschoolIn preschool, your child will be working and discovering things on their own as well as with their peers, so they should exhibit a certain amount of independence. Your child should be able to do projects with other children or on their own for shorter periods—five to 10 minutes—with minimal direction from adults. Choosing on their own whether they want to play with blocks or draw when given the option is another sign they’re ready. Potty training prior to preschool enrollment is also a must.

3. Concentration

Before enrolling in pre-K, your child should have demonstrated the ability to concentrate for a short period, around 10-20 minutes. Being able to sit down and listen to an adult read a book or watch a short video without becoming overly distracted is important. A little distraction is alright, but if they keep getting up every minute, they may not be ready for school just yet.

When enrolling your child in a quality preschool program, certifying they’ve hit all of the benchmarks above will help them excel and make friendships that could last a lifetime.
