When parents enroll their children in a day care center, they want to know their kids will behave within reason. This means using discipline at home to help children understand positive and negative actions and words. To help you prevent bad behavior, Pumpkin Preschool of Fairfield, CT, shares four mistakes to avoid when disciplining your little ones.

What Not to Do When Disciplining Your Children

1. Force Reflection in Time-Out

When a child is placed in a time-out, there’s a good chance they will spend the time thinking about how you’re “mean.” They may even say it out loud! It’s important to not pay attention to them at this time, as it is an opportunity to start over without escalating the situation. Instead, talk about what happened once time-out is over. Many day care centers practice time-outs, so starting at home will help prepare your child.

2. Get Mad

These reactions will likely scare your children, and all they’ll take away from the encounter is that you’re terrifying when mad. If need be, take a few minutes to calm down before addressing a misbehaving child. They’ll be more receptive to you when they’re not cowering in fear.

3. Bribe

Perhaps you’re at the market when your child throws a tantrum. You’re embarrassed and want them to stop, but 10 minutes later, they’re still red-faced and screaming. It’s tempting to reach for a toy or treat off the shelf to bribe them into being quiet. However, instead of learning that it’s not okay to throw a tantrum at the store, your child will learn that doing so may offer a reward. Instead, tell your child to use their inside voice and say how they’re feeling. Acknowledge their emotions and let them know it’s not okay to wail in public. Save the goodies for good behaviors as positive reinforcement.

4. Let Your Kids Go Hungry

The term “hangry”, a combination of hungry and angry, doesn’t just apply to adults. Children with low blood sugar are more likely to misbehave, because they won’t be able to focus.  Ask your day care center about their food schedule and stick to it at home to promote regularity and reduce bad behavior caused by hunger.

All parents make mistakes when it comes to discipline. However, if you can avoid these four, you’ll find your kids learn better habits and react appropriately when in trouble.
