During metal fabrication, your welder is responsible for attaching individual components in a way that will hold up to heavy use. To accomplish this, there are several techniques which may be used. The three most common techniques in stainless steel welding are TIG welding, spot welding, and MIG welding, each with specific strengths and uses.

3 Professional Welding Techniques

1. TIG Welding

TIG welding is also called tungsten inert gas welding or gas tungsten arc welding and is the most commonly used technique in most applications. This type of welding employs argon gas, which is often mixed with other gasses like hydrogen, helium, or nitrogen. The heat output is low, making this technique perfect for thin sheets of metal that might not hold up to other techniques. The results of TIG welding are high-quality, versatile, and long-lasting joints.

2. Spot Welding

WelderAlso called resistance welding, spot welding is an economical choice for both small and large projects. Spot welding uses an electrical current to heat and merge two frayed edges of metal. It is especially useful on metal with a low melting temperature because it doesn’t cause warping.

3. MIG Welding

MIG welding is similar to TIG welding, as both use similar gasses. However, MIG welding relies on an automatically spooling wire instead of manually applied welding rods, which makes it easier to learn and to apply in difficult areas. The wire burns and melts to fuse the two components together, creating a solid, reliable joint.

While the details vary, these welding methods all have one thing in common: sturdy results. For this reason, all three remain popular with welders and any of them can be used for a majority of welding projects.
