Hernias are a common problem that can affect both men and women of any age. Typically caused by straining or prolonged heavy lifting, a hernia occurs when abdominal contents push through a weak or torn abdominal wall.  A visible bulge in the abdomen or groin and associated discomfort is a common indication that a hernia is present.

Hernias won’t heal on their own.  Surgery is required to repair and strengthen the abdominal wall and to prevent the chance of organ tissue (such as bowel) from getting stuck in the protruded position; a situation that could lead to organ damage, infection or even death.

If you are concerned that you may have a hernia, start with an exam at The Mayer Clinic. Our board-certified General Surgeon, Dr. John Mayer, MD is happy to meet you and discuss treatment options that are right for you.  Call The Mayer Clinic at 907-457-5050 to schedule your appointment today!
